Racing Engines in 1986, they have grown from a small business with 4 employees, to the
present "One of the Top Names" in the sprint car engine
building industry with 9 employees. What makes Wesmar one the the top names in sprint
car racing? The answers are simple:
Wesmar is not an assembly line engine shop!
Each motor is custom built around the driver and his particular wants and needs.
After all, wouldn't you feel comfortable knowing YOUR motor is
designed for YOU rather than having one "pulled off the shelf?"

keep up with the ever-changing technology, that in turn benefits you, the racer.

Owners Bob Westphal and Dan Gentrup

WINNERS CIRCLE at the 1998 KNOXVILLE NATIONALS Bob Westphal's name is
synonymous among the racing fraternity as "One of the Good Guys."
After building motors out of his
garage for years, Bob got his break in 1969 working for Ed Pink Racing Engines in Van
Nuys, California. Ed Pink specialized in Drag Racing engines. His clientele
consisted of top names such as Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, Ed "The Ace"
McCulloch, Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen, and Gene Snow, to name a few.
In the winter of 1978, Bob went
to work for Raymond "Blue Max" Beadle. Raymond wanted everything done
in-house. Bob was hired to oversee all machine work, as well as assemble the nitro
burning hemi engines while the team was on the road. With this established, the
"Blue Max" was NHRA Winston Funny Car Champion in 1979, 1980 and 1981.
During the 1982 racing season,
Raymond announced the formation of the "Old Milwaukee Beer" racing team which
consisted of Raymond driving the funny car, Tim Richmond driving the Nascar and Sammy
Swindell driving the World of Outlaws Sprint Car. In addition to this announcement,
it was also made known that Bob would build the sprint car engines in-house.
In May 1986, after many
successful seasons with the sprint car team, including Sammy winning The Knoxville
Nationals in 1983, Bob left Blue Max to open Wesmar with his partner, Dan Gentrup.
Dan is the other partner of
Wesmar. Dan was a diesel mechanic in the mid 1970's who also had a passion for
squeezing extra horsepower from an engine. While helping a friend on his
alcohol-burning hemi engine used for Tractor Pulls, Dan came in contact with Bob at Blue
Max. With Dan's attention to detail and mechanical prowess, Bob hired him to come
to work at Blue Max in 1982.
Since the formation of Wesmar
Racing Engines, they have built engines for a variety of racing sanctions. Wesmar
Engines has competed successfully in Nascar Super Trucks, ARCA, ASA, NCRA Late Models, as
well as Sprint Cars, All-Stars, ASCS, NHRA, WoO, and even a Bonneville Speed Car.
While Wesmar Racing Engines is
new, the experience in the company is NOT!!!
